Canadian Barren Ground Caribou

Do you want a thrilling adventure in the far north? Do you long to trek the boundless tundra, bask in the colours of autumn, breath the scent of the crisp arctic air? Do you want to stalk the majestic caribou with Inuit guides who have navigated this land for hundreds of years? Adventure Northwest offers you the challenge of the Barren Ground Caribou hunt where few people on earth have ever travelled.

Adventure Northwest operates many caribou camps located in the late summer ancient migration pathways of the Bathurst Caribou Herd. This herd is estimated at over 400,000 animals. Often overlooking pristine arctic lakes and surrounded by high eskers all our locations will inspire your longing for wide open spaces and undisturbed land.

At Adventure Northwest we are proud to point out that our hunt package is one of only a handful that offers you a 7 day package with 6 full days of hunting on the land.  Our package gives you the greatest opportunity to find your animal and enjoy an incredible experience in the north, hunting with “the Premiere Big Game Outfitter in Canada’s Arctic”.

ABOUT OUR CAMPS

Our camps consists of comfortable heated wood cabins or tent frames. There is a large Kitchen tent in each camp, where our staff prepares and serves excellent camp meals, which often include caribou and freshly caught fish from the area. The kitchen also serves as a lounge where friends can be made, stories exchanged and a game of cards is always on the go.

During the hunt, you will be transported by boat before walking inland to glass and hunt. The tundra has many eskers and ridges allowing you to get on higher ground to glass. The eskers and ridges also provide good ground cover enabling hunters to get within rifle and bow range. The terrain is generally dry and rocky; no hip waders are necessary, however, sturdy waterproof hunting boots are a must. Because no two hunts are ever the same, Adventure Northwest also reserves the option to locate hunters out on the land if that is where the caribou are located. Our goal is to do our best to get our hunters to the caribou. This means that you will be living in polar tents out on the land and eating freeze dried food. Living conditions will be rougher here than in our permanent camps.

Temperatures in the barren grounds can range from 32 degrees F to 75 degrees F in late August and down to 28 degrees F to 40 degrees F by late September. Some snow can be expected in mid to late September and while it generally melts within a day it has been known to stay.

At  all our camps, Wolf, Wolverine, and Ptarmigan are known to inhabit the area . These tags can be purchased separately. In addition to excellent hunting, Our northern lakes provide great fishing opportunities for Lake Trout and Grayling and Arctic Char. A fishing licence can be purchased separately. Please let us know prior to arrival if you would like to purchase these items.
