After my safe return to Switzerland I can only say: Adventure Northwest and the guides have done it again! My Muskox hunt in Holman in late April 2007 could not have been more successful in every respect. I even suspect that ANW has a special agreement with the weather gods that on my hunts the skies just have to be clear during all the time. And this was the case. How easy to live with -34°C under conditions like that! All important factors of this hunt were perfect. Already on my first hunting day, in the afternoon, a huge bull decided to arrange himself at a distance of 80 yards especially for me. So I was relieved of my worry that I would not live up to ANW’s 100 percent success rate … and on the Minto Inlet the Arctic Paradise I even saw a polar bear retrieving a seal. |

Spring and Fall Arctic Island Muskox At Holman, Northwest Territories Imagine hunting your trophy in a land with no fences, where the animals have not heard the sound of gunfire, where you have the opportunity to fellowship with a small group of friends or individuals. I often imagine this is what it must have been like for the first settlers who saw the buffalo herds of the west. Majestic animals roaming the land. The Victoria Island Musk Ox population has been on the increase for years and has one of the largest concentrations in the Arctic. While the trip is scheduled for five days, the actual hunting time can be shorter due to the abundance of musk ox. In addition to the great hunting, the friendly Inuit of Holman (population 400) will be happy to show you their village where much of a traditional life is still followed. You can purchase soapstone carvings, their famous prints and enjoy visiting your guide’s family. We have 750 MUSKOX TAGS every year. That alone should give you an idea of how many animals are there. On one hunt, our clients counted 368 musk ox in one day of which 168 were bulls. The two musk ox harvested were both record breaking. Hunting Conditions: We have greatly changed the hunts and how they are run from Holman. Initially the hunts were based from the community and the hunter could even return to the hotel that evening. While this is still an option we have found that many of our clients would like to spend several days out experiencing the land and the friendliness of the Inuit guides. The hunt is now set up that we will return to Holman at the client’s direction, not necessarily when the animal is taken. ANW runs its hunts in mid to late April. The days are long and temperatures comfortable. You will be able to traverse large areas of land and enjoy the scenery while hunting. If you choose to camp on the tundra with your guide for the duration of your hunt this is included in your hunt package. Accommodations while camping will be in a heated canvas wall tent or perhaps in a simple trappers cabin. Communication regarding how you want to spend your time after you tag out is very important. We recommend that you clearly let your hunt coordinator and your guide know exactly what you would like to do and remember that the choice is yours. If you choose to return to the community you may stay in the local hotel or your guide may give you the option to stay with him. Both of these options include additional costs that must be covered by you. We advise that staying with your guide in his home must be at your own discretion. Typically you will fly to Holman on a Saturday and your hunt will begin on Sunday. This allows you to hunt until Wednesday and you fly out of Holman on Thursday. On a Spring hunt you will be transported by sled being pulled by your Inuit guide on a snow machine. Snowmobiles provide a great deal of mobility, allowing the hunters to cover a lot of ground and providing an opportunity to look over a good number of Musk ox. While you will be using the snowmobiles to find the musk ox, the law requires the final 1.5km stalk to be on foot. This final aspect of the hunt really allows you to experience the true nature of the arctic landscape as you approach and stalk your musk ox, just as the Inuit have done it for centuries! Our Muskox hunts out of Holman have been 100% successful for seeing a representative mature male muskox and we anticipate the same rate of success with our new style of hunting. Most importantly we also anticipate that the trophy quality will absolutely improve, and hunter satisfaction will skyrocket! There is an option to shoot a second Muskox on this hunt. Like our Caribou hunts many hunters like to have the option of a second tag. Fall hunts are more challenging! You will only see ten percent of the muskox you may see on a spring hunt but our hunter’s success rate is still 100%. You will be taken inland across the fall tundra by ATV or along the stunning coast of the arctic ocean by boat to find your muskox. Riding on the back of these four wheelers can be taxing and sometimes very uncomfortable, but what an incredible opportunity to experience the beauty of the arctic landscape and the challenge of stalking these majestic creatures. Arctic Island Muskox hunting is an incredible experience. Adventure Northwest, “the Premiere Big Game Outfitter in Canada’s Arctic”, is committed to work hard to ensure that your hunt and your memories of the arctic, the land and its people are good ones.
