Holman, Northwest Territories (Importable to the United States)

Pond Inlet, Nunavut (Not importable to the United States)

This is a 16-day; 1X2 hunt with 14 full days of hunting.

This hunt could be considered “the toughest hunt left in North America” and likely in the world. Mentally, physically and environmentally you will be challenged to your limits...10 – 14 days living on the “Top of the World” with nothing between you and the elements except what you are wearing and a light 10 oz canvas tent. You and your guide will glide across the ice using a traditional dog team to navigate the arctic landscape. This can only be described as an incredible adventure.  Even under these conditions the majority of our hunters succeed in having the opportunity to take a trophy home. We are very excited about our efforts to work with the local hunter and trappers association to continue to increase the overall quality of this hunt. In 2006, 100% of our hunters saw polar bears, and 95.2%, all but one of our hunters, took bears.

Jeff  Stohr kept a journal of his hunt. It is a great read and shows the physiological highs and lows that you can expect to experience on this hunt.

Another excellent source of information for pre-hunt preparation is the viewing of Ken Wilson’s (Sportsman on Film) video “Loaded for Polar Bear”. This movie shows footage of a bear hunt from both Holman and Pond Inlet. Contact us to obtain a copy of this video and check out the website at http://www.sportsmenonfilm.com/index.html

 Hunting Conditions:

The local Hunters and Trappers committee operates this hunt and Adventure Northwest is the booking agent for these committees.  Adventure Northwest does not actively operate these hunts from within these communities. We act as your agent when dealing with the community. On occasion hunts do not work out exactly as the hunter thinks they should and thus this must be resolved with the community before the hunter leaves his hunt. As your agent we will be directly involved with assisting you to resolve any issues.

Hunting is done from outpost camps in prime areas, which may be up to 100 miles by snowmobile from the nearest Inuit community. You will travel either on the snowmobile with your guide or in an enclosed box with a viewing window on a sled pulled by the snowmobile. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate requests for clients to drive their own snowmobiles.

We hunt importable bears out of Holman. All of our Holman hunts originate from the community of Holman.

If  for any reason the client has not been successful within the allotted time extra hunting days can be arranged at the community for those hunts that do not involve chartered aircraft support. The cost of these extra days is payable directly to the local Hunters and Trappers Organization.

Things that all hunters must be aware of

  • Travel to and from the community is the hunter’s responsibility. Adventure northwest would be pleased to provide you with information for booking your flights;
  • A representative from the Hunters and Trappers Committee, your hunt coordinator, will meet the hunter at the airport and will be an excellent resource for the duration of your stay;
  • The hunt coordinator will take you to the wild life office in the community where all hunting licenses and tags are purchased by you;
  • All food and lodging while in the community is the hunters responsibility and can cost as much as three hundred dollars ($300.00) a day (Canadian). This includes days lost to bad weather, before, after, and during the hunt. If you tag out early, you have the option of staying out on the land for the remainder of your hunt or returning to the community. If you return to the community it will be your responsibility to pay for food and lodging until the departure of your flight;
  • There is a very good chance the hunter will lose several days of his/her hunt to bad weather, equipment breakdowns or both. Hunters must be prepared for this;
  • The hunter must be prepared to take the taxi from the airport to the hotel ($10.00 per person) and return on your way home if for some reason the hunt coordinator is unable to meet you with a vehicle;
  • It is advised that you have some Canadian currency on hand however the wildlife office, the hotel and the co-op store all take credit cards;
  • Trophy fee for a polar bear is $750.00. This fee must be paid in Canadian currency at the wildlife office in the community;
  • Adventure Northwest highly encourages hunters to buy trip cancellation insurance. If the hunter does not know where to purchase this we can assist in obtaining it; and
  • ANW staff are available 24 hours a day while hunters are on the land.
